3 Insights Into How Listening To Silence Can Quieten The Ego, Mute The Mind and Tune You Into Who You Really Are.

Bestselling Author Eckhart Tolle has taught about the power of the present moment for many years. But I believe it’s his teachings on silence that gives us one of the simplest ways to experience a deeper reality that exists underneath all the noise of our thoughts:

1- Silence is the Death of Ego

Eckhart describes how the mind is obsessed with identifying with thoughts and labels. When we focus on silence, those mental labels start to fall away. “The moment you become aware of the silence, you also have become silent. That is the simple and yet profound realization: Silence is who you are.”

2- The Mind’s Constant Chatter Blocks True Understanding

He goes on to say that creativity, wisdom and insight don’t come from the mental activity itself but originate in the silent space between the thoughts. “All creativity arises out of inner spaciousness, which is silence. Even a thought arises out of that silence.”

3- Silence is the Doorway to Your True Self

Tolle also teaches that by regularly noticing silence, you start to identify with the silence that exists inside you. “Stillness is your essential nature. What is stillness? The inner space or awareness in which the words on this page are being perceived and become thoughts. Without that awareness, there would be no perception, no thoughts, no world.”

One of the most effective ways to connect with the silence within is to go for a walk in nature. Leave your phone at home and just focus on the sounds around you. Try to imagine the silence as the background field from which all sounds emerge and retreat back into. It gets easier the more you practice!
